Check your gas … yep, it happens. You made it to your last stop with the intent to make your next stop at the gas pump, but the car wouldn’t start. Always make sure your gauges are working properly. And when you low fuel light comes on … make it a point to fill up your tank soon.
Usually the first thing we check is the battery. It’s your car’s primary electrical power source. Batteries expire, and eventually just go bad. Sometimes accessories or lights get left on cause the battery to slow drain. And sometimes it’s an easy fix with a jump from a neighbor. Or just replace the battery. If this happens multiple times, it’s probably time for a new battery.
Starters can also go bad for any number of reasons. We typically listen for a loud “clicking” sound. If you hear that sound when you turn the key, then the starter is trying to turn. We would still like to double check it for you.
A few things to check if your car won't start...
The ignition switch also can be a possibility. We can usually eliminate this possibility by simply turning on the headlights. If they turn on, it’s definitely not the battery. That would be an indicator that it may be that the switch needs to be replaced.
Another issue is a clogged fuel filter. If gas can’t pass thru the filter then your car simply can’t start. If you’ve run out of gas recently, it’s possible that fine debris is clogging the filter, and time for it to be changed as well. It may not be obvious that this is the issue, and since every vehicle is different, diagnosing this problem varies from car to car.
